The Fellow Traveler is a character in Pathologic 2. He is considered a deceitful individual, but his affect is amicable albeit cryptic. He operates the Dead Item Shop at night.

Description

The Fellow Traveler is first met during the Prologue, where he emerges from a coffin on the train heading into town alongside the Haruspex, though it is unclear if he is truly another passenger or simply an illusion. He asks Artemy of his intentions in coming to the Town, and expresses apprehension regarding his own arrival, as he isn't sure how he will be received. He also offers to play dice, expresses interest in Artemy's father, and compares the train tracks to the inevitability of fate. Later during Day 1, the train's conductor (Whistler) will tell Artemy that he was the only passenger present on the initial train ride.

For the remainder of the game, the Fellow Traveler operates the Dead Item Shop, which appears in a new location each night (00:00-07:29), and trades a variety of useful items in exchange for Dead Items: That which has been discarded, used up, or is associated with death. Its nightly locations are predetermined, and will be revealed to the player after they view the pantomimes at the Theatre. However if the player knows where the shop is ahead of time, it is not required that they attend the performance.

Endings

Deal Ending

See Deal Ending

If the player visits to the Theatre of Death for their seventh death, they will find the Fellow Traveler in place of Mark Immortell. The Fellow Traveler will offer to absolve the player of all future and past death punishments issued by Mark, but says he will later take something of great value from them. As with death punishments incurred throughout a playthrough, the decision made here by the player will stay with the save file permanently.

Should the player accept, upon successful completion of Day 11, they will be denied the right to see either of the game's formal endings. They will instead be brought to the Theatre, where Mark and his Executors Talon & Beak will admonish them for accepting the Fellow Traveler's Deal. The Bachelor is also present, practicing his lines, as is the Changeling, who expresses disdain for both the Bachelor and Haruspex. Upon leaving the Theatre, the player appears in a train car with the Fellow Traveler, who refers to them as "my Fellow Traveler." The Fellow Traveler seems in good spirits, stating that he has "reaped [his] harvest," and that the two of them are inseparable now, to spend the rest of their days together.

Late Ending

See Late Ending

In the Late Ending, after being admonished by Mark Immortell for arriving too late to the Theatre, the player will find themselves in a train car with the Fellow Traveler, where they will have the same conversation as described for the Deal Ending.

Nocturnal & Diurnal Endings

See Nocturnal Ending / Diurnal Ending

In either of the game's formal endings, the Fellow Traveler will greet the player in a train car, where he congratulates them on the decision they made for the town.

Dead Item Shop

Each night (00:00-07:29), the Fellow Traveler will open his shop at new location. These locations will be marked on the map after observing the nightly pantomime at the Theatre. However if the player knows where the shop is ahead of time, it is not required that they attend the performance. A map of the shop's locations (which do not vary between playthroughs) can be seen below, in the Gallery section. As with all stores, Dead Item Shop's daily inventory will offer just a random assortment of the items listed below.

The Dead Item Shop will always trade with the player regardless of their current district reputation.

During the early morning of Day 6, the Fellow Traveler will only be offering Inquisitorial Coupons (called "Candy Wrappers" at the time) for ¤125. Exchanges made with him on that night are done via cash, rather than the usual barter system, and he will have ¤2500 in his purse. He accepts many more items than usual, most notably Infected Livers and Infected Kidneys (However he will still not accept Infected Blood). This is the one opportunity in the game for the player to sell infected organs for money. Otherwise none of his other buying prices are worthwhile (Not even healthy organs, which he buys for less than Var's going rate.).

Notes

  • A 'fellow traveller' refers to an individual who 'is intellectually sympathetic to the ideology of a political organization, and who co-operates in the organization's politics, without being a formal member of that organization.' [1] Given the Traveler's arrival alongside the Plague, it is possible that he is sympathetic to the "cause" of the Plague (destruction and widespread panic), though he does not intend to spread it himself.
  • Upon the final conversation with the Fellow Traveler on the train during the prologue, if the player turns their camera away from him and then once again to face him, his appearance will change to that of an Executor, synonymous with the physical representation of the Plague in game.
  • If the Follow Traveler plays dice during the Prologue's train ride, he will always roll a 5 and a 3. The total of 8 may be a reference to 'The Eighth' or the Udurgh that Artemy must protect from the plague.
  • The Fellow Traveler is a variant of the Ouzel NPC.
  • There will always be a dead Bandit outside the Dead Item Shop during the early morning Day 2. This body can be looted and autopsied with no impact to district reputation, as it is an implicit tutorial for what the shop accepts.
  • The Fellow Traveler's name was previously spelled as "Traveller" with two L's, however this was patched out on PC. Console versions for Pathologic 2 still spell it with two L's, presumably because they've received minimal patching since their release.
