Trading tutorial from Pathologic 2

We have to portray the townsfolk as a Greek chorus: that is to say, depersonalized in the utmost, a many-headed hivemind. Not a collection of individuals but a mass, devoid of color and personality. Soulless.
[from the game’s design documents]

In addition to the central healers and Bound, the Town is populated with an array of background characters. These figures provide the player with information regarding events and town history, and also offer services such as barter and repair. When delivering messages to the player, townsfolk may sometimes have nicknames such as "Onlooker", "Whisperer", or "Busybody", rather than their model's usual avian-themed name.

Townsfolk can usually be found wandering the streets or inside of houses. Should the player's district reputation drop low enough, adult townsfolk will deny their services, and Militia will attack on sight. However children's trading services will always remain available to the player, and adults will still be willing to speak with the player.

Men

Crows, Nightjars, and Pigeons are functionally identical, as they trade for the same items and offer the same repair services. Nightjars and Pigeons share the same model with the exception of their facial hair.

Women

Dove, Kayura, and Oriole can repair certain Clothes - specifically headwear, gloves, and torso clothing. If approached outdoors, any of the three women can repair any of the three aforementioned clothing categories. However indoors, their services are restricted: Dove repairs gloves, Kayura repairs cloaks, and Oriole repairs headwear. It is not clear whether this distinction is intended.

Footwear must be repaired by Pochard.

Unlike adults, children will trade with the player character regardless of district reputation.

Young teens tend to value sharp objects and can offer food, medicine, or ammo.

Infected Townsfolk

Infected versions of townsfolk can be traded with for valuables and food in exchange for drugs. They will always trade with the player regardless of district reputation. Infected Crow & Ouzel are functionally identical, as are infected Dove & Oriole.

Because Goose and Starling are associated with the upper class of the Stone Yard Quarter, they do not accept home-brewed drugs, which are emblematic of the Kin. Conversely, Pochard and Kayura are aligned with the Earth Quarter's working class, and do not accept manufactured drugs such as Morphine and Immunity Boosters. The remaining infected townsfolk can be seen as a middle class of sorts, in that they accept all of the aforementioned drug categories, and can also be found across the entire town. Whereas the "upper class" townsfolk do not typically appear in the Earth Quarter, and the "working class" do not appear in the Stone Yard Quarter.

Hostile

These townsfolk are immediately hostile to the player and killing them will increase reputation, with the exception of Arsonists and Infected.

Arsonists will not attack the player unless the player is infected with the Plague or if the player attacks them. Attacking or killing arsonists does not cause reputation to change, however any other nearby arsonists will also become aggroed. Plague can be cured by fire, so standing in the ground fires made by Arsonists' molotovs is an alternative, albeit dangerous, means to cure the player character of Sand Pest.

Infected move slowly, and their attacks only affect immunity and infection levels. Despite being hostile, killing them hurts local reputation, albeit minimally.

Other

Militia are found wandering around the districts and will attack the player if their district reputation is at its lowest tier ("You're Hated Here"). They will also be stationed at the entrances to infected districts and can be found in houses in burned districts. They are variants of the Crow, Nightjar, Ouzel, and Pigeon NPCs wearing guard caps.

Army Soldiers and Flamethrowers replace Militia once the Army arrives, although Militia can still be found in houses in burned districts. Army Flamethrowers are only found in infected districts. Similar to the ground fires made by Arsonists, Flamethrowers' attacks can serve as an alternative, albeit dangerous, means to cure the player character of Plague. Because Flamethrowers' attacks are dynamic, it is generally safer to seek out static ground fires for this purpose. Army Flamethrowers can be killed, however they do not have a death animation, so this is probably unintended. Because their health is so large, the most realistic way to kill them is one-shot kills via damaged lockpicks.

The Town is a large settlement in the Russian steppe that has been built along the Gorkhon River—naturally, people will be living within it. There are many "extra" townsfolk that are found throughout the Town, who provide both information for the players to progress and to learn about the type of people they are. Interacting with these characters is vital to the success and health of the player, as they offer necessary items and services for survival. They can usually be found wandering the town or inside of houses.

If the player's Reputation drops low enough or they needlessly attack people, townsfolk will either run away from them or attack on sight. Children do not care about reputation and will always trade with the player.

With the exception of Butchers, these townsfolk will tell you information about the Town or current events, but offer no other services.

Notes

  • Trading with a Teensy is the only way to find Shmowders outside of quests and looting infected houses.
  • Children cannot be killed, except for Boys.
  • Children and women - except for Boys - can become frightened by enemy townsfolk, the player taking out their weapon, or the player attacking townsfolk and will run away. Boys and men will become aggressive and attack the player if the player attacks innocent townsfolk.
  • When breaking into houses in healthy districts, you can trade with and ask for repairs from the people inside as long as you don't take out a weapon or get caught looting a container. When getting caught, Men and Boys will attack, but you will not lose reputation as long as you don't attack them.
  • Flamethrowers' fire can reduce your infection and even cure it completely, but Arsonists' fire cannot.
  • Other minor characters can be found on the Pathologic Minor Characters page.
