The Thanatica is a research lab dedicated to the ambitious goal of destroying Death itself. It is located in the Capital and is lead by Daniil Dankovsky, a thanatologist and Bachelor of Medicine.

Description

Back in Thanatica, we fought for life. For the right to live. For a chance to… to never let death veto people.
The Bachelor in Pathologic 2.

The Thanatica is run by a small group thanatologists who have the united goal of removing the inevitability of Death from human existence. Their goal is to allow people to chose when they wanted to die and, ultimately, find the secret to immortality.

It is implied that Thanatica ran public displays of their work as lectures, as Aglaya Lilich once attended a presentation where Bachelor Dankovsky reanimated dead tissue, specifically the body of a dead woman. This event became widely known, as there are children in the Town who know of the "resurrection".

Thanatica's work is heavily theoretical, speaking of immortality not only in relation to the ideas of physical death, but also in the spiritual. The Utopian theory that Death can be escaped not by prolonging the body, but instead by escaping and transcending it leads the Bachelor to believe that the Polyhedron is the key to his and Thanatica's research. He believes that destroying the structure would delay the triumph over death indefinitely.

Plot

Prior to the events of Pathologic, Thanatica comes under the ire of The Powers That Be, who wish for the lab's demise. Though their research gave conclusive results, it is likely that it was not enough to impress their benefactors. It is under this threat that Bachelor Dankovsky travels to the Town on the Gorkhon river to meet Simon Kain - a 150 year old man who may be able to prove his theory of immortality.

The work of Thanatica is often called grotesque and immoral, with many disgusted by their outlandish experiments and theories. Is it due to the perceived unethical nature of their work that during the events of Pathologic, the Thanatica is destroyed and their research is burnt.[1]

As part of a promotion for the 2016 Demo of the Pathologic: The Marble Nest, Ice-Pick Lodge created a short interactive website survey headed by the "Thanatica Labs". The survey received answers from a number of interested participants on the nature of their deaths and the ease or struggle of their passing. In the survey, they aimed to collect certain statistical data and conduct a small study on the limits of human ability. All questions in the study are intended to only deal with antemortal aspects of human consciousness. The Thanatica Labs view deep memory as an anchor that stalls the natural processes. According to their research, the lower this number, the less painful the transition period of death is.
